Hematite is an iron oxide. It can be red, reddish-brown, brown, steel or silver-gray, and black. Hematite is also called specularite, kidney ore, iron rose, and martite. It is a main (or only) component in red ochre which is seen in ancient historic cave paintings and pottery decoration. It also is a component of Tiger Iron. As early as 2500 B.C. it was used in seals. Roman warriors carried it for protection. It exists worldwide, and Mars has this stone, too. The name hematite comes from the Greek for blood, because its powder is red, and even some of the stones are red.

Hematite has a strong effect of calming the mind. It is also very protective and a grounding stone.
