Birthstones and zodiac stones are both ways to choose crystals. Zodiac stones are related to astrological sign. Birthstones are related to birth month.
Birthstones came originally from the 12 stones in the Hebrew High Priest’s breastplate. There was one stone for the tribe you were born into, thus, birthstones.
The names of birthstones have not always translated well through the centuries. For instance, Chrysolite could mean Peridot or Chrysoberyl. I have chosen here to represent it as Peridot.
Additionally, traditional and modern gemstones may not always agree. I believe it is helpful to choose one style, be it biblical, traditional, or modern, and stick with that.
Zodiac stones relate to the 12 astrological signs.
Because of the way months and signs overlap crookedly, the birthstone and zodiac stone for a person’s birthday may not be the same. For instance, a Cancerian born in late June would have a modern birthstone of Alexandrite and a zodiac stone of Emerald. Therefore, I think it makes sense to decide beforehand whether you are looking for a birthstone or a zodiac stone.
Do not worry about making a mistake. People can wear the birthstones or zodiac stones of other months or signs with no ill effects. The person you are giving the stone or jewelry to can appreciate it and use its energies regardless.
